Shorts: Cotton On, Shirt: JCrew, Belt: Aritzia, Clutch: Plum, Sandals: Aldo, Necklace: Vintage Belt (thanks Mom!)

You can’t really go wrong with black and white. You can, however, end up looking like you should be waiting tables. My tip? Add a big old necklace (even better if it’s a gold belt your mom wore in the 80s) and a bright clutch.  Done and done.

Stylish Comfort

Shorts: Cotton On (in NZ), Lace top: Aritzia, Denim shirt: Aritzia, Ballet Flats: JCrew, Bag: swapped, Bracelet: H&M, Sunnies: Joe Fresh

I’ve never thought you have to trade comfort for style, to me it’s all in the approach. Take a couple of basics in neutral colours, thrown in cute flats, choose a statement piece (I’m along the lines of go big or go home) and voila—chic and comfy.

Running errands doesn’t have to mean sweatpants ;) .

Summer Style

Dress: JCrew, Necklace: Pyrrha, Sandals: Aldo (on sale now!), Purse: Plum, Bracelets: from Rubaiyat and my travels

After my first rainy winter in Vancouver, I was beginning to wonder if good weather here was a myth created by cranky sun-deprived Vancouverites to mess with other Canadians. The past week has proved that theory wrong and the sun has been out in full force!

I am all over the maxi dress for summer. Grab a great pair of sandals and a few accessories (statement necklace or a stack of bangles) and voila, you are instantly pulled together—it makes getting ready in 10 minutes an actual possibility. My recommendation when looking for a maxi dress? Choose one with a defined waistband otherwise you run the risk of people asking when you are due.

The first time I wore this dress T asked if I was going to a ball. First of all, do people still go to balls? And if so, why haven’t I been taken to one? Clearly I have the proper attire I just need to drum up some glass slippers.

Coachella 2012: Beauty Bag Prep

Since I’m attempting to pack light, I figure I need to downsize my make-up bag to the essentials.

Here are my beauty must-haves (pared down of course) for Coachella:

1) Sunscreen
After spending my first very rainy winter in Vancouver I am probably the pastiest I’ve ever been (I know, so hot) which means good sunscreen is a must. A long-time fan of GM Collin products I’ll be applying and reapplying their Créme Solaire Mineral Sun Cream SPF 25 to my face and slathering the rest of me in Ombrelle.

2) Waterproof Mascara
Racoon eyes. ‘Nuff said. I’ll be taking along Maybelline’s XXL Extensions waterproof mascara.

3) Lip Balm
On a recent trip to Sephora I was introduced to fresh Sugar lip balm. It’s light, smooth and doesn’t get all gooey when you reapply. Bonus points for SPF 15.

4) Neutral Palette
Oh Bobbi, you always know what a girl needs. This shimmer brick comes with five neutral shades from a rosy pink to a dusky taupe and does triple-duty as a blush, eyeshadow palette and highlighter. It’s like a make-up Swiss Army knife.

5) After Care
I’m looking forwards to loads of sun and dry desert air but I suspect my skin isn’t which is why I’ll be sure to give my skin a little TLC every evening with my don’t-leave-home-without-it eye cream by GM Collins.

Travel Tip: Make flying easy on yourself by packing all your makeup in a clear bag instead of having to deal with taking everything out and transferring it to an airport Ziploc. I love the Joe Fresh clear makeup pouch (pictured). Pretty sure you can pick one of these up at your neighbourhood Superstore.

What to Pack: Coachella 2012

I’m not going to lie for someone who has travelled a lot I am absolutely horrible at packing light. Tell me to pack for two years and I am good to go, tell me to pack for five days and suddenly I decide that seven pairs of shoes is totally acceptable. What can I say? I’m a much better long-term traveller.

One of my travel goals is to be able to pack everything I need for a five-day trip in carryon and still be stylish and appropriately dressed for any occasion. I know, it’s a really serious goal. (If you are a really awful packer, Kelly of Travellious found an amazing app that makes packing a snap!)

Coachella is a mere week and half away (we’re headed to the second week) and I cannot wait! I’m determined to pack light and am looking at the lightest but most versatile clothes that I can cram into a carryon. Maxi dresses are my new fave (I know I am late on that trend) so I chose one simple dress and built around it. I’m opting for basics and then adding in some fun with bright (and inexpensive, thank you H&M) jewellery and accessories.

What to pack for Coachella

Everyone is telling me to pack boots but given that I plan to rock a carryon I suspect my trusty Converse will be the shoes I end up wearing the whole time. Don’t worry, I’ve heard the horror stories of wearing sandals to any music fest (thanks to Coachella expert Kelsey Dundon of The Anthology) so my sandals will be worn outside the venue.

What is your must-have for a music festival?
