Odds & Ends: Martinis, Puppies & J.Crew in Vancouver

I actually got reprimanded for not blogging from a coworker yesterday. This week was pretty mental but I figured I’d wrap up the week with some random picks and get back to regularly scheduled blogging next week.

1) Two weeks ago I was living it up in Victoria on a foodie tour. On this trip, I was introduced to the Empress 1908, a tea-infused martini, at the Bengal Lounge in the Fairmont Hotel. It’s the best martini I have had hands down (and yes, it comes with a mini scone!). Read more about my foodie adventures here.

2) We just found out our apartment is pet-friendly! We are now looking for a one of these (a Bo-Dach, a cross between a Boston Terrier and Dachshund). Know of any? Send ‘em my way!

3) I decided that I will run the BMO half in May and will train for a full in the fall of this year. Pretty sure I deserve a new running top.

4) Vancouver peeps! J.Crew is opening up on Robson…if Jenna Lyons rolls into town you know where I’ll be.

5) On that note J.Crew’s spring collection is chock full of clothes I want to see hanging in my closet. I think this dress (which went on sale today!) is going to be a summer staple. What are you adding to your closet for spring?

Blue Times Two

Jeans: Gap, Shirt: Anthropologie, Denim Shirt: Aritzia, Clutch: Plum, Shoes: J.Crew, Necklaces: Pyrrha and Jeanine Payer from Rubaiyat, Earrings: Type B Sunglasses: Joe, Summer 2010

Recognize the shirt? I know, I know it has stripes…I can’t help it. I don’t normally mix denim with denim, it reminds me too much of the early 2000s when the all-denim look was all the rage (thanks Britney and Justin) however when I threw on this denim shirt it seemed to pull together a look perfect for a casual Saturday.

Note the bright pink lipstick.  I might look like I am owning it but this is way outside the comfort zone.  Considering my next purchase is going to be  poppy red pants I’d better get comfy with bright colours real fast.

Saturday Stripes

Jeans: Gap, Sweater: J.Crew, Jacket: Aritzia, Bag: Gap, Shoes: Nordstrom, Necklace: Jeanine Payer from The Rubaiyat, Wedding Bands: custom by John Blair except for eternity band by Experimetal, Rings: From Brazil and Chile

I always have high hopes of just throwing on some heels and going, but then the reality of hoofing it around Vancouver sets in (I walk a lot in the city) and I end up in flats. Which is totally ok, I mean it was a rainy Saturday in Vancouver so it’s pretty impressive that I wasn’t wearing rainboots and a slicker.

* Notice the sweet welt on my finger, that is what happens when you leave your straightening iron on for ages and then proceed to lean on it. Word to the wise: don’t let your hair tools get to 400F and then forget to unplug them.

Fashions Fade, Style is Eternal

“Young women you’re going to be old women some day…”

I figure the fashion faux pas you’ll end up regretting the most occur between the ages of 14 to 25. Don’t get me wrong, that is what being young is all about. Your teens and twenties are for sampling, experimenting and getting away with wearing just about anything (However it doesn’t mean you won’t look back and cringe at your chunky-heeled wedge sandals circa ’99—you know you did).

I’d like to think that all this experimentation (and cringing) leads to developing your own individual style, hopefully one that goes past just what the current trends and magazines are touting and one where you feel like you are expressing exactly who you are.

About a year ago I came across this really awesome blog, Advanced Style —probably one of the only street style blogs that caters to the plus 60 set. It’s awesome and encouraging that just as fashion today is geared to the young, true style is something you develop over your entire lifetime. These ladies are a testament to that:

I sincerely hope I rock it this hard when I am 90.

Currently Coveting: Stripes & Brights

I hate January fashion because:

  1. It’s like all the brands are trying to clear out whatever they have left in the warehouse
  2. All the colours are blah
  3. Spring, and getting to wear spring clothes, seems too far away

I’m hoping that Vancouver lives up to its reputation and that spring starts in March unlike Calgary which skips spring and moves straight to summer (in July).

One trend that I am super excited about for Spring 2012 is the return of really bright colours. Punches of neon are being seen everywhere from lip gloss to t-shirts. This makes me ridiculously happy—we all tend to dress in really “safe” colours. I’m hoping to bust out some brights this year.

Here are a few “brights” that I’d like to add to my closet this season:

1) Red ballet flat from J.Crew

I have these in black (I know, boring) but I love how simple they are.  J.Crew has recently released this classic in an array of colours, all of which could easily add that pop of colour to any neutral outfit.

2) Curved Stripes Dolman from Anthropologie

I love stripes. And this shirt just solidifies that love. I can already see this slouchy top with cropped black skinny’s, the red flats above, a messy bun and red lipstick (which, incidentally, I am looking for as well, any suggestions?).

3) No 2. Pencil Skirt in Spicy Gold from J.Crew

Pretty sure I mentioned this skirt last time though it was in a different colour. Clearly I need to just order this skirt. Since the skirt is so vibrant I’d opt to pair it with a neutral (navy or white) but would probably get a little crazy with the shoes (you know the ones). If you are going to go bright you might as well commit.

4) Skinny Jeans in Scarlet from Paige Denim

Apparently red is a big colour for me this season. I think of all the coloured denim out there red is the colour to choose. It pairs nicely with many other colours and I suspect it will be the one colour that can be worn again next season (pretty sure the Kelly green jeans, won’t be back next season…if you bought a pair I hope you opted for a pair from H&M or another fast-fashion brand). Totally unrelated but why do jean models always wear the worst shoes.

What pieces are you coveting for Spring 2012?
